Places Of learning and help In and around Berwick
In this article we are going to describe some of the
learning services provided in the local area as well as services
provided by the government for anyone who requires help and advice.
The Community Centre
The Community Centre has
many courses offered to everyone from the age 16 + providing such courses as; Literacy, Numeracy,
Languages, ECDL and other Computing courses, Art courses, Photography, Drug
Awareness, Accountancy, Book Keeping, Crafts and many other varied
courses.
The centre is situated at 5, Palace Street East
just at the bottom of the Ravensdowne Hill.
The main entrance and car park are situated
to the left of the Building and the main entrance for the registry
office is the large door to the front of the building.
The
Berwick Youth Project
The Berwick Youth Project offers a wide array of
support for the youth of Berwick such as advice on drink, drugs and contraception.
They also have supported accommodation at the Quay
Walls and above the Beehive Cafe in Golden Square.
The Beehive acts as a social
centre of youths promoting cultural, sporting and social events. You can even do
the Duke of Edinburgh Award with the Project.
Berwick Youth Project also
helps youngsters cope with family/ friend bereavement and counselling
for many issues. Everything you tell the youth workers is confidential, only the
worker you have confided in will know this information, it will go no
further.
So basically they are there to give you the support
that you need. They are nice kind people
too.
Train Station

The Train station is
situated to the north of the town, many people use the Train station
for commuting on weekdays and for going out to Newcastle
or Edinburgh
to see movies or have day's out with family and friends.
There is a taxi rank and a bus stop for commuters
to connect to other towns and business's in the area .
Northumberland Construction
College Berwick,
The construction centre in Berwick
upon Tweed is situated in the
Ramparts Industrial Estate opposite the S.I.T.A recycling site. The
College runs courses on
Carpentry and Joinery, Bricklaying, Painting and Decorating and
Plastering as well as taster courses for the above. There are no basic entry requirements apart from a keen
interest in the subject chosen. You can have an apprenticeship to
join the course or study with the college until you can find
employment with a tradesman. Certain individuals will receive EMA
depending on parental income.
I SA.
(Integrated Safety Associates)
I.S.A is on Castlegate a 5
minute walk from the Town Centre and a two minute walk from Berwick
upon Tweed Train Station. The company runs many different courses
throughout the year, including Manual Handling, Health and Safety in
The Workplace, Food Safety and Hygiene, First Aid in the Workplace, Fire
Wardens training and many more. It is run by Graham Exley who has
many years experience in the Health and Safety business.
Berwick Library

Run by Northumberland County
Council, Berwick Library was opened in 2000 so it’s a very
modern building. Its on the first floor above the Social
Services offices but a lift is
available providing access for everyone. Situated on Walkergate,
it’s a 2 minute walk from the town centre.

Monday: 10:00a.m – 5:30p.m
Tuesday 10:00a.m – 5:30p.m
Wednesday: 10:00a.m –
7:00p.m
Thursday: Closed
Friday: 10:00a.m – 7:00p.m
Saturday 9:30a.m – 12:30p.m
You must have a Library Card
to borrow a book, DVD or CD. This card can be used in any
Northumberland library. For a small fee you can also use the on-site computers for
any research you might need to do.

Connexions:
Connexion is located down at the
Quay Side. Through Connexions you can get a place in an E2E group. They also help with careers guidance,
what qualifications you might need and where to get them. They will help
you fill in forms for college
and for UCAS applications.
The Jobcentre
aka The Dole Office
also helps you find jobs suitable to your needs and what you like
doing. After a certain period of signing on fortnightly you will be
changed to weekly, then back to fortnightly and eventually onto New
Deal, which is kinda like E2E, but isn’t E2E.
Citizens Advice Bureau
CAB is
located just off Castlegate on Tweed Street. They offer free legal and
financial advice to help people with their situations such as if
benefits have been stopped for any reason or if you are trying to
claim benefits that you are or should be entitled to. C.A.B also help foreign citizens to renew passport
and stuff they need like Work Permits. They also help with problems with your
landlord. The C.A.B are really kind people and helpful and always
get your problems sorted out in the end for you.
